How Optimal is DuckDB’s Optimizer really?

When playing around with DuckDB’s optimizer and the query plans it produces, you will find that some query plans look less efficient than expected. Some of these differences stem from ordering issues in DuckDB’s phase-based optimizer, others yet turn out to be inherent design decisions. This thesis investigates these issues and attempts to find solutions to improve the optimizer’s performance.
